about dominique

Emmy-nominated anchor Dominique Sachse considers herself fortunate.  To serve a community she has proudly called home since 1975 is rare in the news business.  She strives to bring that comfort level and knowledge of Houston to every newscast and breaking news story she delivers, and she wants you to know she's passionate about it.

Her career path is also atypical, with a kick start in local radio.  She began as a Metro Traffic reporter for a variety of radio stations. One of those stations, Mix 96.5, hired her as a disc jockey, where she worked for the next two years on the overnight and then late night shifts.  She seized an opportunity at KPRC, Local 2 for the morning show traffic position and was given a lucky break one week to fill-in as an anchor. Management decided that's where she should be after covering live the San Jacinto river fire.  Her intensity yet ease on the anchor desk, as well as down-to-earth demeanor, have been witnessed by Houston viewers since 1994.

Dominique anchors KPRC's 5, 6 and 10 p.m. newscasts and works on special reports throughout the year. Some highlights include covering President George Bush's inauguration in January 2001 and Pope John Paul II's visit to Mexico City canonizing Juan Diego in 2002. In 2006, she presented a compelling series on Inflammatory Breast Cancer, along with a phone bank to answer viewers' questions and gained a highly sought-after interview with Ashley Benton, the Houston teen accused of murder in a gang fight.  She also gets to focus on the positive, by showcasing Jefferson Award winners and their community contributions.

Her work off camera can sometimes be even busier.  She has co-emceed the Jerry Lewis Labor Day Telethon for over a decade, partnered with the Houston Humane Society to give animals a voice, teamed with the Food Allergy and Anaphylaxis Network to raise awareness of food allergies in children and continues to host numerous charity events across Houston. One of those is the Dominique Sachse Celebrity Golf Classic, which raises scholarship money for student athletes at her alma mater, the University of Houston.

Dominique's work hasn't gone unrecognized. She's been honored with several awards from both the journalism and Houston community, including spot news coverage from The Houston Press Club and the Texas Associated Press. Dominique received the "Outstanding Young Communications Alumna" and "Distinguished Alumni" awards from UH.  She was named "Best Television Personality" by the Houston Chapter of American Women in Radio and Television in 2002, 2007 and again in 2009, and her 10pm newscast continues to win the Emmy for best newscast.  Some of her favorites, however, come from the community. Readers of the Houston Press and Houston Chronicle choose Dominique as their favorite when it comes to best newscaster or local personality. She appreciates the recognition.

2010 will bring a continued focus to projects already started, including stories to raise awareness about Inflammatory Breast Cancer and the efforts underway at MD Anderson cancer center regarding IBC research and treatment. She also looks forward to new partnerships made in the community and with viewers who choose KPRC Local 2 for their news.

While Dominique clearly enjoys her work, she knows there's more to life than "what you do."  She feels that raising a happy, bright and kind child, who understands the importance of respecting himself and others, defines who she is as a person.   Without hesitation, she'll tell you that having her little boy was life's biggest blessing and most important job to date.  Styles turns 5 this year, and one thing she has realized is that life runs by a different calendar when you have kids.  The pages just fly by.
